Your 500 visa end date is coming and you're not ready to leave. Every realistic pathway — 485 graduate visa, another student visa, skilled migration, employer sponsorship, partner visas — ranked by who actually qualifies in 2026.

Every international student hits this moment: the visa end date is on the calendar, and "go home" isn't the plan. The honest truth is that staying lawfully requires a new visa — Australia has no grace status for students who simply don't leave. But you have more options than most agents admit, and the right one depends on where you are in your journey.
⚠️ General information only, current as of October 2026. The 2 October 2026 rule changes closed several popular "stay longer" tricks. Check Home Affairs or a MARA-registered agent before acting.
Work through these in order — they're ranked from most common to most situational.
Option 1: The 485 Temporary Graduate visa (the default next step)
Finished an eligible Australian qualification? The subclass 485 is the bridge almost every graduate takes: full work rights, no employer sponsorship needed, and time to build the skilled work experience that PR pathways demand.
- Post-Vocational Education Work stream: generally up to 18 months (VET/diploma graduates with an occupation on the skilled list)
- Post-Higher Education Work stream: 2–3 years for Bachelor's and Master's graduates, 3 years for PhD
- Age limit: 35 or under at application for most streams
- Fee: $5,750 from 1 July 2026 — budget for it before you graduate
The catch that ends plans: you generally must apply within 6 months of completing your course and meet the English requirement (which many students let lapse after admission — you need a fresh test). Start with our 485 Graduate Visa guide and the 500-to-485 transition checklist.
Option 2: Another student visa (now heavily restricted)
Continuing to a genuinely higher qualification — Bachelor's to Master's, for example — is still legitimate. But since 2 October 2026, applying for a new student visa onshore is the exception, not the rule. Unless you fit an exemption (up to 12 extra months with the same provider, doctoral study, DFAT/Defence sponsorship, provider default, or a deferred course), you must lodge from outside Australia and be offshore at grant.
The "cheap diploma to stay longer" strategy is dead by design. If your next study step is real and upward, our student visa extension guide walks through the new lodgement rules.
Option 3: Skilled migration (189 / 190 / 491)
If your occupation is on a skilled list and you can pass the points test, you can move straight toward permanent residency — no employer needed for the 189.
- 189 Skilled Independent: PR outright; needs the highest points (realistically 85–100+ in 2026)
- 190 State Nominated: +5 points and a state invite; many states prioritise graduates of their own universities
- 491 Regional (Provisional): +15 points, three years of regional living, then PR via the 191
The points test pass mark is 65, but invitations go to the highest scores. Most students land in the 70–85 range and lift their score with Superior English, regional study, a Professional Year or NAATI. Run your numbers in our PR points calculator guide and compare all student-to-PR pathways.
Option 4: Employer sponsorship (482 → 186)
Found an employer willing to sponsor you? The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) gives you up to four years with an approved sponsor, and most 482 holders transition to permanent residency through the 186 Employer Nomination Scheme after two years with that employer.
Reality check for fresh graduates: most sponsored occupations require at least one year of relevant work experience, and sponsorship costs the employer real money — which is why the 485 year(s) of Australian work experience matter so much. Sponsorship is a strong pathway, but rarely a day-one option.
Option 5: Partner visas (820/801)
If you're in a genuine married or de facto relationship with an Australian citizen, PR holder or eligible New Zealand citizen, the onshore partner visa is one of the strongest pathways there is — full work rights on the bridging visa while it's processed. Be prepared for a long processing queue and substantial evidence of your shared life. Note the trap: partner visas are assessed on genuineness, and a relationship that exists only on paper for visa purposes is refusable and bannable.
Option 6: Visitor visa — know exactly what it can't do
A visitor visa can buy you time to attend graduation, travel, or pack up your life properly. That's all it is. Since the October 2026 changes, you cannot switch from a visitor visa to a student visa onshore, and a visitor visa gives you no work rights. If an agent suggests "tourist visa now, sort the rest later," walk away — that advice worked in 2022 and gets people stranded offshore in 2026.
Option 7: Leave on time, apply from home
This isn't giving up — it's often the strategically correct move. Lodging your next visa (a new 500 for further study, or a skilled visa) from your home country:
- Keeps your immigration history clean (no unlawful days, no bridging visa complications)
- Is now required for most new student visa applications anyway
- Lets you strengthen your application — better English scores, more savings, completed documents — without the pressure of an expiring visa
Students who overstay or lodge desperate onshore applications spend years untangling the damage. Students who leave cleanly and apply properly come back.
The 60-day action plan
- Today: check your exact visa expiry in VEVO and your course completion date.
- 8+ weeks out: decide your pathway. 485 applicants — book your English test now.
- 6 weeks out: gather documents (completion letter, transcripts, OSHC, skills assessment if going skilled).
- Before expiry: lodge a valid application. A Bridging Visa A keeps you lawful while it's decided — see our Bridging Visa A guide.
- Never let the visa expire first. Unlawful days follow you into every future application.

Frequently asked questions
What happens if my student visa expires in Australia?
You become unlawful the day after expiry if you haven't lodged a new valid visa application. Unlawful status can lead to detention, removal, and re-entry bans of up to three years, and it seriously damages future visa applications. Always lodge your next application before your current visa expires.
Can I stay in Australia after my student visa expires?
Only if you lodge a valid application for another visa before your student visa ends — a 485 graduate visa, a new student visa (if you meet the October 2026 onshore exemptions), a skilled visa, or a partner visa. A Bridging Visa A then keeps you lawful while the new application is processed.
How long can I stay in Australia after my course ends?
Your visa stay period is fixed at grant: typically course end plus two months for courses of 10 months or longer finishing January–October, or to 15 March the following year for courses finishing November–December. It cannot be extended — you must apply for a new visa to stay longer.
Can I apply for PR straight after my student visa?
Yes, if you meet the requirements: a positive skills assessment in a listed occupation, competent English, and at least 65 points on the points test (realistically 75–100 to receive an invitation). Most graduates use the 485 visa first to gain the Australian work experience that lifts their points.
Can I go from a student visa to a working holiday visa?
Only if your passport country has a working holiday arrangement with Australia and you meet the age limit — many major student source countries (India, China, Nepal, Pakistan) have no 417/462 arrangement at all. Check eligibility for your specific passport before relying on this.
