Some jobs in Australia require specific certifications. Here are the two most common for students.

RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol)

What It Is

Training certification required to serve or sell alcohol in Australia.

Who Needs It

  • Bar staff
  • Wait staff in licensed venues
  • Bottle shop workers
  • Casino employees
  • Event staff at licensed venues

How to Get It

Options:

  • Online course (3-4 hours, $20-50)
  • In-person course (often available through RTOs)

State-Specific: RSA is state-issued, so you need one for the state you're working in.

  • NSW RSA is different from Victorian RSA
  • If you move states, you may need to redo it

Valid providers (check your state):

  • Club Training Australia
  • Axcelerate
  • Various RTOs

Cost

$20-50 depending on provider

Tips

  • Complete before you start job hunting — many employers want it ready
  • Keep your certificate accessible
  • Check if your state requires renewal (some are lifetime, others expire)

White Card (General Construction Induction Card)

What It Is

Safety training required to work on any construction site in Australia.

Who Needs It

  • Construction workers
  • Tradespeople
  • Electricians, plumbers, etc.
  • Anyone entering active construction sites
  • Some warehouse workers

How to Get It

Steps:

  1. Complete General Construction Induction Training (6-8 hours)
  2. Receive a Statement of Attainment
  3. Apply for your White Card through your state's WorkSafe/SafeWork authority

Options:

  • Online course (some states allow this)
  • In-person course (required in some states)

Cost

  • Course: $50-100
  • Card application: varies by state (often $20-40)

Important Notes

  • National recognition — unlike RSA, White Card works in all states
  • Carry it whenever on site
  • Must be the physical card, not just the certificate

Other Useful Certifications

Food Safety/Food Handler Certificate

  • Required in some states for food handling
  • Good to have for hospitality
  • Online courses available ($20-50)

First Aid Certificate

  • Not required but makes you more employable
  • Useful for many industries
  • HLTAID011 (Provide First Aid) is standard

Barista Training

  • Not legally required
  • But having certification/experience helps get cafe jobs
  • Short courses available ($50-200)

Forklift License

  • Required for operating forklifts
  • Higher-paying warehouse work
  • More involved training ($200-400)

Should You Get These?

Definitely Get RSA If

  • You want hospitality work
  • You're flexible about job types
  • Your target area has lots of bars/restaurants

Definitely Get White Card If

  • You're interested in construction/trades
