Getting your bank account set up is one of your first priorities after arriving.

Before You Arrive

Some banks let you start the application before you get to Australia:

CBA — Open Smart Access account online, complete at branch NAB — Start online, verify at branch Westpac — Online application available

Advantage: Your account can be ready when you land.

Documents You'll Need

Essential:

  • Passport
  • Valid visa (student visa 500)

Helpful:

  • Australian phone number
  • Local address (hostel/temporary is fine)
  • Student ID or CoE

Choosing Your Bank

For First Account

We recommend CBA or NAB:

  • Most ATMs and branches
  • Familiar with international students
  • Straightforward setup process

Later

Consider adding a digital bank like Up for better savings features.

Visit your chosen bank's website and begin the application. You'll enter:

  • Personal details

Step 2: Book an Appointment

Either online or by calling the bank. This is to verify your identity.

Step 3: Branch Visit

Bring:

The staff will:

  • Verify your identity

  • Set up your card PIN
  • Activate online banking

Step 4: Receive Your Card

  • Some banks give instant cards at branch
  • Others mail within 5-7 business days
  • Activate via app or phone

  • Lock/unlock card feature

Bank Account Types

Tips for Success

Do

✓ Set up notifications for all transactions ✓ Use the bank's official app (not third-party) ✓ Keep a small balance in savings as buffer ✓ Set up PayID for easier transfers

Don't

❌ Ignore fraud alerts ❌ Share your PIN or passwords ❌ Click links in texts claiming to be from your bank ❌ Leave large amounts in transaction account (low/no interest)

Important: Your bank will never ask for your password or full card number by phone or email. If unsure, hang up and call the official number.
