Engineers Australia Skill Assessment 2026: CDR, MSA & Cost Guide
Step-by-step guide to the Engineers Australia (EA) skill assessment in 2026 — CDR pathway, Washington Accord shortcut, fees, processing time, and rejection traps.

If you're applying for an Australian skilled visa as an engineer, Engineers Australia (EA) is your assessing authority. Here's how the 2026 process works.
Two Main Pathways
1. Accredited Qualification Pathway (Fast)
If your degree is from a Washington Accord, Sydney Accord, or Dublin Accord signatory country, EA recognises it directly. You only need degree + transcripts, CV, English test (IELTS 6.0 / PTE 50 minimum), and ID documents.
No CDR required. Processing: 15–20 working days for fast track ($1,260) or 12–15 weeks standard ($670).
2. Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) Pathway
For graduates of non-accredited universities, you must write a CDR consisting of:
- 3 Career Episodes (1,000–2,500 words each)
- Summary Statement mapping each paragraph to EA competencies
- CPD list (continuing professional development)
- CV
EA Occupational Categories
| Category | ANZSCO Examples |
|---|---|
| Professional Engineer | Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Software (4-year degree) |
| Engineering Technologist | 3-year engineering degree |
| Engineering Associate | 2-year engineering diploma |
| Engineering Manager | 4+ years management experience |
Cost in 2026
| Service | Fee (AUD) |
|---|---|
| Standard assessment | $670 |
| Fast track (15 working days) | $1,260 |
| CDR pathway | $670 + $400 surcharge |
| Relevant Skilled Employment Assessment | $400 |
| Review | $550 |
Processing Times
- Washington Accord (standard): 12–15 weeks
- Washington Accord (fast track): 15–20 working days
- CDR pathway: 18–22 weeks
Writing a CDR That Passes
Career Episode Structure
Each Career Episode must include:
- Introduction (~100 words): dates, project, location, role
- Background (~200–500 words): project context, objectives
- Personal Engineering Activity (~500–1,000 words): YOUR work specifically — first person "I designed…", "I calculated…"
- Summary (~50–100 words): outcomes, what you learned
Summary Statement
A table mapping each paragraph in your Career Episodes to EA's competency elements (e.g. PE1.1, PE2.3). This is what assessors actually read.
Common Rejection Reasons
- Using "we" instead of "I" — they need to assess YOU, not your team
- Career Episodes too theoretical — must describe engineering work YOU did
- Plagiarism — EA runs every CDR through Turnitin; even using your own previous CDR is flagged
- Mismatched occupation — claiming Civil Engineer with mostly site supervision experience
- Generic Summary Statement — every claim must point to a specific paragraph
Tips From Engineers Who Passed
- Choose 3 different projects across your career
- Pick projects where you can show calculations, drawings, or design decisions
- Get CDR review by a registered Chartered Engineer or migration agent (cost: $400–$1,500)
- Submit your best 3 episodes, not your longest
- Mention standards used (AS/NZS, ASME, IEEE, etc.) — EA loves specifics
After Your Positive Assessment
EA results are valid for 3 years. Use our PR Points Calculator to estimate your total points, then submit an EOI via SkillSelect.
For state nomination (190 or 491), engineers are on most state lists — Victoria, NSW, SA, Tasmania all actively invite engineers in 2026.
