Australia Student Visa Processing Time in 2026 (Subclass 500, by Sector)
Current subclass 500 processing times by education sector, why some applications take 10 days and others 7 months, and the exact checklist that keeps yours in the fast lane.

"How long will my student visa take?" is the question every applicant asks — and the honest answer is: it depends heavily on your education sector. A higher education application can be decided in about two weeks while a vocational (VET) application can run past seven months. Same visa subclass, completely different queues.
⚠️ General information only, figures current as of mid-October 2026. Processing times describe recently decided applications — they are not a promise about yours. Always check the live Home Affairs processing times tool before making travel plans.
Current subclass 500 processing times (October 2026)
| Sector | 50% decided in | 90% decided in |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign Affairs or Defence sponsored | ~3 days | ~22 days |
| Non-award | ~3 days | ~43 days |
| Higher Education (university) | ~16 days | ~4 months |
| Postgraduate Research | ~17 days | ~55 days |
| Independent ELICOS (English courses) | ~22 days | ~53 days |
| Schools | ~28 days | ~7 months |
| Vocational Education and Training (VET) | ~53 days | ~7 months |
| Student Guardian (subclass 590) | ~43 days | ~8 months |
How to read this table: "50% decided in 16 days" means half of recently decided higher education applications were finalised within 16 days. "90% decided in 4 months" means one in ten applicants waited longer than that. If you are in the slow tail, it is almost always because something in the application needed extra checking — not because the queue is random.
Why higher education is fast and VET is slow
After the October 2026 student visa reforms, decision-makers apply much heavier scrutiny to applications they see as higher risk for "visa hopping" — using study as a way to stay and work rather than to genuinely study. In practice that means:
- University Bachelor's, Master's and PhD applications with a clean progression story are processed quickly.
- VET and standalone English (ELICOS) applications face more Genuine Student assessment, more requests for further information, and longer waits.
- Applications from regions or provider types with historically high refusal and non-compliance rates get closer document verification.
This is not a reason to avoid VET if it is the right course for you — it is a reason to lodge early and make the application watertight.
The 7 things that actually slow your application down
- Incomplete financial evidence. Bank statements that don't show the required history, sudden large deposits, or missing loan/sponsor documents trigger manual review. See the financial capacity requirements.
- A weak Genuine Student (GS) statement. Generic statements get flagged. Yours must explain course choice, career logic and ties to home — our GS test guide has the structure that works.
- Health examination delays. Book your medical as soon as you receive the HAP ID — don't wait to be asked.
- Character/police certificates from countries with slow issuing processes.
- Responding slowly to a request for information (RFI). You usually get 28 days, but every day you wait is a day added to the decision.
- Inconsistent documents. Names, dates or course details that don't match across your passport, CoE and OSHC certificate.
- Applying onshore under the new rules. Since 2 October 2026 most onshore applications are restricted — see the student visa extension guide before assuming you can lodge from inside Australia.
How to keep your application in the fast lane
- Lodge a "decision-ready" application. Every document attached, certified and translated on day one. Decision-ready files are the ones decided in days.
- Lodge early. You can apply as soon as you hold a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). For VET and schools sectors, treat the 90% figure as your planning number, not the 50%.
- Match your OSHC to your visa length. A policy that ends before your requested visa period causes avoidable back-and-forth — compare providers in our OSHC guide.
- Answer RFIs within 48 hours where possible, with exactly what was asked for.
- Don't book non-refundable flights until the visa is granted. No processing-time table can guarantee a date.
If your visa isn't granted before your course starts
Contact your education provider immediately — providers deal with this constantly and can defer your intake to the next start date and issue a new CoE. A deferral does not harm your application. What you must not do is travel to Australia on a visitor visa intending to "switch" to a student visa onshore — the October 2026 rules removed that pathway for almost everyone.
Bridging visas and waiting onshore
If you hold one of the few exemptions allowing an onshore application and lodge before your current visa expires, a Bridging Visa A usually keeps you lawful while you wait — conditions and work rights are explained in our Bridging Visa A guide.

Frequently asked questions
How long does an Australian student visa take in 2026?
It depends on the sector. As of October 2026, Home Affairs figures show higher education applications decided for 50% of applicants in about 16 days and 90% within 4 months, while VET applications take around 53 days for half of applicants and up to 7 months for the slowest 10%. Check the live Home Affairs processing times tool for current figures.
Why is my subclass 500 visa taking so long?
The most common causes are incomplete financial evidence, a Genuine Student statement that needs manual assessment, health or character checks still in progress, or a request for further information. Applications in the VET and schools sectors are also processed more slowly than higher education applications by design.
Can I fast-track my Australian student visa?
There is no paid priority service for student visas. The only reliable way to speed up a decision is to lodge a complete, decision-ready application: all documents attached, health examination done early, and any requests for information answered within 48 hours.
What do '50% processed in' and '90% processed in' mean?
They describe how long recently decided applications took. '50% in 16 days' means half of applicants got a decision within 16 days; '90% in 4 months' means 10% of applicants waited longer than 4 months. They are historical statistics, not a guarantee for your application.
Should I book flights before my student visa is granted?
No. Home Affairs advises against making irreversible travel commitments before grant, because no processing-time figure can guarantee when your application will be decided. Book flexible or refundable fares if you must plan ahead.
What happens if my course starts before my visa is decided?
Contact your provider as soon as possible — they can defer your enrolment to the next intake and issue a new Confirmation of Enrolment, which does not harm your application. Do not travel to Australia on a visitor visa intending to convert onshore; that pathway was removed for most people in October 2026.
